Nissan BladeGlider prototype is making advancements into the future.
While times are changing and electric vehicles aren’t necessarily still associated with the strange-looking, niche cars of yesteryear, “zero emissions” still isn’t a phrase you’d expect to hear in the same sentence as “high performance.” Nissan is hoping to dispel that stereotype by introducing a new kind of sports car to the world. The Nissan BladeGlider prototype, which debuted recently in Rio de Janeiro, features a full-electric battery powertrain with emphasis on dynamic handling and powerful performance.
Nissan first showed off similar concept cars back in 2013 at the Tokyo Auto Show. The Nissan BladeGlider is the fruit of those labors, employing a philosophy Nissan is calling Intelligent Mobility to optimize driving pleasure and sporty capability while drastically reducing environmental impact. The aerodynamic shape and silent engine make for an enjoyable ride, and while the BladeGlider is strikingly futuristic, something similar may not be too far off from mass-market production.
The Nissan BladeGlider prototype follows in the footsteps of the Nissan LEAF, the most popular zero-emissions vehicle in the world. With the company also working on autonomous driving technology and increasing their efforts in the realm of environmental responsibility, the innovation of the Nissan BladeGlider seems like a natural development for Nissan. No announcements have surfaced about whether or not this vehicle will eventually be redesigned for a mainstream market and greenlit for production, but Nissan seems to be pursuing this concept long-term.
Nissan is helping to eliminate pollution and cut dependence on oil by providing an all-electric vehicle shuttle service for the COP21 (Conference of Parties) Climate Change Summit. Recognizing the importance of alternative energy designs, Nissan has become a leader in green technologies.
According to Nissan, 200 Renault-Nissan employees were specially trained for the event in Paris. These workers will man around two hundred vehicles, a fleet composed of the Nissan LEAF, the Renault ZOE, and the Nissan e-NV200. These will help conference attendees get around the city in a flash.
“Helping negotiators get to their meetings, riding in quiet and smooth EVs that can be 100 percent recharged with renewable and extremely low-carbon electricity, sends a powerful message about our corporate commitment to the environment – and about our employees’ desire to be part of the solution to climate change,” said Marie-Francoise Damesin, Renault-Nissan’s global head of human resources.
The COP21 Climate Change Summit is the 21st annual conference addressing the need for more research on climate change, as well as action. Nissan is one of a handful of global automakers seeking to redefine mobility by incorporating the latest alternative energy designs.
Nissan announced in June that it has a plan for reusing Nissan Leaf batteries. After years of research into ways to reuse car batteries that no longer have the juice to power a car, Nissan is one of the first manufacturers, along with General Motors, to designate old EV batteries as backup batteries for buildings.
Nissan has partnered with the company Green Charge Networks, which provides and installs batteries for customers. Receiving old Leaf batteries from Nissan will reduce GCN’s costs, as they will have to produce fewer batteries. This partnership isn’t a surprise, as Nissan teamed up with Sumitomo to research how to reuse EV batteries shortly after releasing the first Leaf.
Powering a car is a big job, and when a battery is no longer strong enough to do it, it still has plenty of juice for lighter-duty work. Storing ene rgy in commercial and industrial buildings doesn’t have anywhere near the energy output of driving a car, making these EV batteries a perfect choice for the job.
It seems like prices are raised every year on everything from a gallon of milk to our favorite sports cars. But we come bearing good news. The 2016 Nissan 370Z pricing has officially been released and will remain the exact same across the lineup as the previous model year.
In total, there are eight 370Z Coupe models, four 370Z NISMO models, and five 370Z Roadster models that will be available for customers.
The starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the manual transmission Coupe model will be $29,990 and the NISMO model’s MSRP will start at $41,990. The Roadster’s starting MSRP will be $41,820.

In a revelation sure to impress the X-files detectives themselves, Nissan disclosed its newest exciting innovation; the glow-in-the-dark Nissan Leaf. While third party manufacturers have produced luminous paints and car wraps, Nissan is the first car company to fabricate an actual incandescent vehicle.
In an effort to symbolize the Leaf’s energy-converting EV capabilities, Nissan partnered with Hamish Scott, the inventor of glow-in-dark pavement, to create the glowing paint – fittingly – named Starpath. Comprised of a secret formula of organic materials and the biologically inert chemical Strontium Aluminate, the paint is able to absorb the ultraviolet energy from the sun during the day and convert it to light that shines 8-10 hours during the night. If commercially made, the glow-paint could last for up to 25 years.

During the annual IHS Automotive Loyalty Awards, the LEAF took home the award for best Non-Luxury Traditional Compact Car. Good Housekeeping is known as being the go-to publication for the best consumer products, which is why it comes as no surprise that the magazine found the 2014 Nissan LEAF SL to be their Top Electric Car Pick, using their tried, tested, and trusted testing method. Through a combination of driving range, great value, and segment-exclusive safety technologies, such as the Around View Monitor, the Nissan LEAF has proved, once again, why it is the best-selling electric vehicle in the world and deserving of this new title.
“As more than 64,000 American LEAF owners will tell you, the economics of going electric are simple: Buy a Nissan LEAF and save money by conveniently charging at home instead of paying more at the gas pump,” said Fred Diaz, senior vice president of Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations in the U.S. “But the real beauty of the Nissan LEAF is that it’s roomy and, best of all, fun to drive, which is why it received this honor from the Good Housekeeping Research Institute.”
Good Housekeeping determined the top picks of its 2014 car review by putting them to the test on the track, suburban roads, and highways. During these evaluations, the researchers tested each car for ergonomics and convenience features. With an EPA-estimated driving range of 84 miles and a MPGe rating of 114 combined, all for the price of about $22,000, it really comes as no surprise that the LEAF has come out on top.

After a great summer of sales for the automotive industry all around, Nissan is continuing their upward trend with improved sales during September as well. The Nissan Group September sales showed that the Rogue, LEAF, and others are still on the rise.
In total, Nissan Group September Sales reached 102,955, an 18.5% increase from 2013. Nissan Division sales, which excludes Infiniti sales, was at 95,118 units in September, an increase of 22.2% over last year.
Many vehicles in the Nissan lineup saw an increase in popularity and purchases last month including the Rogue, LEAF, Versa, Sentra, Altima, Frontier, and Murano. Some of these vehicles also set records for their model. Check it out:

An electric pickup truck sounds like the perfect solution for truck lovers who need a smaller, more fuel efficient pickup. What Nissan is calling the LEAF Frontier, better known as “Sparky,” is just that. The LEAF Frontier was created simply by taking the popular all-electric Nissan LEAF and installing a pickup bed from the Frontier. The fully electric truck was built in order to help carry parts around the factory quickly.
Auto Blog reports that Nissan has admitted that they “tried to keep [the LEAF Frontier] a secret and be exciting for everybody. But we have visitors and they come and they see that truck and they go straight to ‘What is it?’ and they start looking at it, and it makes great conversation.” They surely aren’t wrong about Sparky being a head-turning topic of conversation. The idea of an electric-powered pickup truck from Nissan is certainly one that captures the imagination.
For now, Sparky will remain in the Nissan factory as an extra helping hand for engineers, but hopefully someday it will become available for purchase. Until then, you’ll have to settle for test driving the LEAF and the Frontier at Bates Nissan one at a time.
