The year was 1970, and a lot had happened. From the death of celebrities to the Vietnam War, there was attention on many different topics. But, there was one thing that had never before been talked about – preserving the earth. Thus, a Wisconsin senator decided to make a holiday that celebrated the earth and how to protect it, and Earth Day was created. In this blog you will find more Earth Day facts, information, and what you can do to help.
Earth Day Facts
Nowadays we see a lot of vehicles that are very earth-friendly like the Nissan LEAF, and electric vehicle that is emission-free, or the Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid that combines electric and gas power to give off fewer emissions when driving. Back when Earth Day was just being founded, you couldn’t find vehicles like that. There were V8, gas-guzzling sedans that got little miles to the gallon and gave off emissions we see in big ‘ole SUVs and trucks.
When Gaylord Nelson, the U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, created Earth Day it did more than just demonstrate against air and water pollution. It brought together everyone for a cause. “Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders,” says EarthDay.org. “The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the pass of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.”
Since that time April 22nd has marked the time to come together and join forces against the pollution of the air, water, forests, and endangering of animals on our planet.
Now, you may be wondering what you can do to help. Well there are many ways to do your part. The Earth Day organization suggests that you call upon your cities to pass bills and legislations to invest in clean energy and smart grids. Participation can be from your home, a local campaign, Earth Day events, and etc. Any way to get the word out will be helping the cause.
You yourself can also cut down on the amount of pollution you put out by recycling, disposing of waste properly, driving vehicles that do not put off as many emissions, and by using solar energy when possible.
