IIHS Makes Key Changes to Top Safety Pick Awards for 2017

Nissan Top Safety Pick

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a government-run organization that rates vehicles on their safety. The group has adjusted to the ever changing market over the years more than in the past. Technology has come a long way but the group’s most recent change isn’t for autonomous technology.

Beginning in 2017, the IIHS will score vehicles on their headlights. In order to earn top scores, vehicles must earn a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating in the headlight category. That category joins the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side crash tests as well as roof strength and head restraints & seats. Front crash prevention includes optional technology that reduces the impact or avoids frontal crashes entirely.

Most automakers pass the front and side crash tests with flying colors. Unlike the other tests, the IIHS will test every trim that uses a different type of headlight. With this most recent change, the roadways are about to get even safer in one of the simplest ways possible: visibility.

To earn Top Safety Pick awards, automakers will have to improve their vehicle’s lighting as well as their overall structure.

Here at Bates Nissan, we’re confident that Nissan will adjust to the new headlight category and come out on top!

2016 Nissan Altima Earns Top Safety Pick Plus Award

Nissan Altima Safety

The 2016 Nissan Altima has joined the other vehicles in our lineup that have earned a Top Safety Pick + award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), including the Maxima and Murano.

The Altima scored “Good”—the highest possible rating—in all five of the IIHS’s crashworthiness categories: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, seats and head restraints, and roof strength.

These ratings are good enough to cinch the Top Safety Pick recognition—also achieved by the Rogue and Sentra in our lineup—but the Altima scored that extra “+” at the end by earning a “Superior” rating for front crash prevention when equipped with the optional Forward Emergency Braking, giving it the Top Safety Pick Plus award.

When a front collision is imminent, the system alerts the driver; if the driver fails to respond, the system can even apply the brakes to mitigate or entirely avoid the crash. This is just one of the many safety features available on the 2016 Nissan Altima. Explore them all at Bates Nissan!

Nissan Titan XD Named 2015 Truck of Texas

2016 Nissan Titan XD

The new diesel 2016 Nissan Titan XD was named the 2015 Truck of Texas by the Texas Auto Writers Association, which holds the Texas Truck Rodeo once a year to determine the best trucks of the year. The 2016 Titan XD hasn’t even been released yet, but Nissan chose to include it in the 2015 Rodeo, and it definitely paid off.

The Texas Truck Rodeo took place outside San Antonio this year in the state with the most truck drivers in the US, and the new diesel Titan XD outstripped every other truck in terms of efficiency, power, handling, and a variety of other criteria.

The winning Titan XD has a 5-liter V8 turbo-diesel engine, which won the best powertrain award in addition to helping the Titan win the Truck of Texas award. Two other Titans also won the award, including the Pro-4X, which took the best off-road category, and the Titan XD Platinum Reserve, which won best luxury pickup.

Nissan Murano Named 2015 Top Safety Pick Plus

2015 Nissan Murano

The Nissan Murano was recently named a 2015 Top Safety Pick Plus by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Murano scored “Good” ratings in all five of the IIHS safety tests, earning it the highest honor a vehicle can receive.

Fred Diaz, senior vice president of Sales & Marketing and Parts & Service for Nissan, said, “This Murano has once again raised the bar for Midsize Crossovers in terms of modern styling, levels of interior refinement, luxury and technology in its class. At Nissan we are happy to the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus rating to the list.”

Being awarded a Top Safety Pick Plus rating doesn’t come easily either. IIHS raised their standards for the tests two years ago, requiring vehicles to earn “advanced” or “superior” ratings in the front crash prevention tests, which the Murano did.

If you’re interested in testing out one of the most stylish and safest vehicles on the road, come visit us at Bates Nissan and take a ride in the all-new Murano.

Award-Winning 2015 Rogue Handling: Best in Safety and Performance

Rogue

The new Nissan Rogue was recently named to Kelley Blue Book’s (KBB) “10 Best AWD Vehicles under $25,000.” Featuring available third row seating, the latest driver assist technologies, and incredible performance, it’s easy to see why the Rogue was named among the best cars on the market.

According to Nissan, the 2015 Rogue handling is one of the major features KBB editors were most impressed with. Aside from state-of-the-art AWD, the new model also has Advanced Ride Control, Active Trace Control, and Active Engine braking among other things.

“Featuring Advanced Ride Control, Active Trace Control, and Active Engine Braking among many other features, with a premium look and feel, Rogue is a solid entry in the marketplace. We are ecstatic that the Rogue has been recognized by Kelley Blue Book,” said Dan Mohnke, Nissan Chief Marketing Manager.

The Rogue also comes with premium seating and extra cargo room. EZ Flex Seating helps drivers and passengers stay comfortable – something you might not realize is important until you have it. All things considered, it’s no wonder KBB chose the Rogue as a top pick.

No Question about the Nissan Sentra’s Safety

The 2015 Nissan Sentra has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick Award, thanks to a number of structural improvements made this year along with a robust suite of advanced safety features.

IIHS’s Top Safety Pick Award recognizes vehicles that do exceptionally well in the moderate overlap front, roof strength, side, and head restraint tests. It also requires that the vehicle earn a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating in the small overlap frontal test. The Nissan Sentra earned the best-possible score of “Good” on all five tests.

Nissan has modified the Sentra’s front structure, including the A-pillar and doorsill, helping the compact car to achieve its “Good” rating in the new and difficult small overlap frontal test. In addition, standard features include Nissan’s Advanced Air Bag System, Anti-lock Braking System, Brake force Distribution and Brake Assist, front and rear crumple zones, energy absorbing steering column, among others.

“Nissan is committed to safety and innovation, and Nissan is proud to achieve the IIHS Top Safety Pick rating for the 2015 Sentra,” said Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations U.S., Nissan North America in a statement. “As a compact sedan, Sentra is a critically important vehicle in Nissan’s lineup and with its standard safety features we’re bringing a high level of safety and security to a growing consumer segment.”

Here at Bates Nissan, we think the Nissan Sentra’s safety scores are a testament to Nissan’s continued commitment to building safe vehicles. Stop by today to learn more about the incredibly safe Nissan Sentra!

Nissan Customer Loyalty Booms Thanks to the New LEAF

nissan leaf

The Nissan LEAF was recently named one of the most popular cars on the road based on customer loyalty. During the annual IHS Automotive Loyalty Awards, the LEAF took home the award for best Non-Luxury Traditional Compact Car. Considering it was the only plug-in nominated, the fact that it won says a lot about its incredible performance and quality.

According to Nissan, the new LEAF is selling like crazy, beating all of its previous sales records in 2014. This plug-in features seating for five, 114 MPGe, and a range of 84 miles. The LEAF truly is one of the best alternative-energy models on the market.

“Since entering the market in 2010, the Nissan LEAF has steadily gained supporters throughout the U.S.,” said Toby Perry, director of marketing for Nissan LEAF. “While the majority of original buyers were electric vehicle enthusiasts, we’re now seeing more and more ‘regular’ car buyers fall in love with LEAF.”

Nissan customer loyalty is so impressive because of the high-degree of quality that comes standard with every model. Not only is the LEAF an affordable car, but engineers have consistently pushed the envelope on the design. That’s one major reason more drivers than ever are switching to the all-electric model.

Good Housekeeping Magazine Names Nissan LEAF Top Electric Car Pick

2014 Nissan LEAF

Good Housekeeping is known as being the go-to publication for the best consumer products, which is why it comes as no surprise that the magazine found the 2014 Nissan LEAF SL to be their Top Electric Car Pick, using their tried, tested, and trusted testing method. Through a combination of driving range, great value, and segment-exclusive safety technologies, such as the Around View Monitor, the Nissan LEAF has proved, once again, why it is the best-selling electric vehicle in the world and deserving of this new title.

“As more than 64,000 American LEAF owners will tell you, the economics of going electric are simple: Buy a Nissan LEAF and save money by conveniently charging at home instead of paying more at the gas pump,” said Fred Diaz, senior vice president of Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations in the U.S. “But the real beauty of the Nissan LEAF is that it’s roomy and, best of all, fun to drive, which is why it received this honor from the Good Housekeeping Research Institute.”

Good Housekeeping determined the top picks of its 2014 car review by putting them to the test on the track, suburban roads, and highways. During these evaluations, the researchers tested each car for ergonomics and convenience features. With an EPA-estimated driving range of 84 miles and a MPGe rating of 114 combined, all for the price of about $22,000, it really comes as no surprise that the LEAF has come out on top.

While Bates Nissan doesn’t have the LEAF in stock for your test-driving pleasure, we do offer plenty of other eco-friendly vehicle options to try out. Make sure you stop in to our dealership today and give them a test drive today!
