The top Nissan NISMO race car was recently announced by the brand, and the results may surprise you. It’s the Nissan Skyline GT-R R32—a classic for most auto enthusiasts. Nissan recently held a competition on social media called the #NISMOtop20 competition to determine which cars fans loved the most. And, now that the votes are in, it looks like the GT-R R32 has won bragging rights.
According to Nissan, the GT-R R32 was only in production for five years, but it won several awards and championship races during its short lifespan. For instance, it won the SPA 24 and the Australian Touring Car Championship, both in 1991. The Skyline also took home the gold at the Bathurst 1000 two years in a row.
“It was in Japanese touring cars where the R32 saw arguably its biggest successes,” stated Nissan in a press release. “The Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 scored the victory in every Japanese Touring Car Championship race during the 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993 seasons, earning championships for the Hasemi and Impul teams along the way.”
The standard R32 had a 2.6-liter engine with all-wheel drive, which generated up to 276 horsepower and up to 266 lb-ft of torque. It also weighed in at about 3,100 pounds. Still, the R32 maintained impressive handling, a smooth ride, and looks that simply couldn’t be beat.

The second round of the 2016 Super GT Championship recently transpired at the Fuji Speedway in Japan. Nissan made a great show of force in not one, but two classes.
The Nissan GT-R took the cake in both the GT300 and GT500. In the latter race, the #1 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R, manned by the team of Ronnie Quintarelli and Tsugio Matsuda, finished first. It was a result that may not have been. The #12 Calsonic IMPUL GT-R, driven by JP de Oliveira, had passed his teammates and
was on his way to victory when he tragically blew a tire on lap 96 and spun out.
In the GT300, GT Academy alumnus Jann Mardenborough and his partner Kazuki Hoshino won in their #3 B-MAX NDDP GT-R. This is an exceptional feat considering that it was only Mardenborough’s second Super GT race.
After the race, the young driver said, “I feel great to be able to take victory in my second race in the Super GT. Kazuki and I both carried out a good race with no mistakes so I’m happy about that.”
Spa 24 Hours may not enjoy the same level of prestige as Le Mans, but it certainly deserves to come at least close. The event takes place in the rolling hills and verdant forests of Belgium at one of the most beautiful tracks in the world. It’s a favorite among racing drivers, who always appreciate its old-school racing roots and the famous uphill Eau Rouge corner.
Nissan hasn’t failed to show its appreciation, either. Ahead of this year’s Spa 24 Hour race on July 25, it presented an incredible collection of short clips of last year’s cars racing through Eau Rouge, in slow motion. Nissan didn’t just show off its own GT-R NISMO GT3 car, but also showed some of the competing cars as well. This is unlike most promotional material we see in the business, and makes us think that Nissan actually does care about the artistic side of racing!
