When it comes to high-quality construction and premium materials, Nissan is hard to beat. This high quality promise extends to Nissan’s production process as well, as the automaker is routinely implementing energy-efficient practices in an effort to achieve sustainable manufacturing without sacrificing design or quality.
This June, Nissan announced a new plan to take its commitment to the next level: it will now use high-formability steel in the construction of more of its vehicles so as to increase their overall performance as well as reduce their harmful emissions. In addition to these benefits, the ultrastrong steel will create a lighter vehicle, which generally increases fuel-efficiency.
The use of ultrastrong steel is quite exceptional, as it is an industry-first. Nissan will be the first automaker to use it in the construction of its vehicles, once more marking its place as a lead innovator in the auto industry. After its extensive research, Nissan reports that “the steel’s combination of stamping formability and strength makes it possible to form parts with complex shapes that are thinner and lighter than those made of conventional high tensile strength steel, while maintaining the ability to absorb energy in a collision.” As an end goal, Nissan aims for the ultrastrong steel to “make up 25 percent of the company’s vehicle parts by weight.” They have already achieved such a feat in the new INFINITI QX50, which is comprised of 27 percent ultrastrong steel.
